A spin-out from the Center for Genetic Improvement in Livestock, LMRD performed genetic testing on sheep to detect spyder-lamb syndrome. This common defect caused defective limbs in sheep and these tests were used to detect carrier animals in breeding stock. The test is still used today.

Founded in 1997 by the PI and partners, the company grew to approximately $300,000 in revenue with 2 full time and a few part time employees. Acquired by InfoGen in 2001.
