Rural Broadband Service Fund

The Rural Broadband Service Fund is a restricted account to be used for grants to providers for deploying broadband service in Rural Utah areas.

Criteria and Requirements

  • Broadband service means any wire line technology having the capacity to transmit data from and to a subscriber’s computer to the internet or internet-related services
  • Must be a provider wishing to deploy broadband service in a rural area
  • Provider has a viable business plan to continue providing service to all or some subscribers in the area
  • Provider has the financial, managerial and technical ability to deploy broadband service
  • Must have a minimum rate of data transmission of 256k per second
  • Must be in a rural community with a population of 10,000 or less in which broadband service is not available (based on the most recently published data from the United States Census Bureau).
  • The cost of deployment of broadband service in the rural area is reasonable
  • Initial terms and conditions on which broadband service will be made available to potential subscribers in the rural area are reasonable
  • Submit application including a legal affidavit which provides information prescribed by the Director

Amount of grant shall be no greater than the lesser of ½ of:

  • The actual cost of deployment of broadband service in the rural area; or
  • The projected amount established during the application process by the director and board for the deployment of service in the rural area as provided in the verified application

Payment of Grant

  • Paid post performance based on the actual costs of deployment as established by verified accounts filed after completion
